XIITH BIOLOGY QUESTION PAPER.

SESSION ENDING EXAMINATION 2017
CLASS XI
BIOLOGY
Time Allowed: 3 ½ Hours.                                                                                                             Max Marks: 70
General Instructions:
1              All Questions are compulsory.
3              Section ‘A’ consists of 5 questions which are very short answer type carrying 1 mark each to be answered in one word or one sentence each.
4              Section B consists of 5 questions which are short answer type  carrying 2 marks each to be answered in about 20 -40 words each.
5              Section C consists of 12 questions which are also short answer type carrying 3 marks each to be answered in about 40 – 60 words each.
6              Section D Consists of only ONE value based question carrying 4 marks.
7              Section E consists of THREE questions  carrying 5 mark to be answered in about 80 – 100 words.
8              There is no overall choice; however an internal choice has been provided in one question of TWO marks and one question of THREE marks and THREE questions of FIVE marks.
                A Student has to attempt only one of the alternatives in such questions.
9         Where ever necessary the diagrams drawn should be labeled.

Section - A

6              T.S of dicot stem and monocot stem are provided to you.  How do you differentiate them pertaining to the following:
                (a) Arrangement of vascular bundle.
                (b) Types of tissue that constitutes hypodermis.

7              Mention the location and function of:-
                (a) Malpighian tubules   (b) Gizzard
8              Draw a neat diagram showing the position of centromere on different types of chromosome.
OR
                Draw a well labeled diagram of the ultra-structure of a chloroplast.
9              (a) certain plants will flower only when they are exposed to low temperature for a few weeks.  What do you call this requirement?
                (b) Name the causative agent of ‘bakane’ disease in rice seedlings.
10           You have eaten idly in breakfast.  List the enzymes and their action to completely digest the major nutrients in it.

11           Write the characteristic features of phaeophyceae, with reference to:
                (a) Pigment      (b) cell wall     (c) Reserve food.
12           (a) Organisms belonging to a particular phylum exhibit metagenesis. Name the phylum with an example.
                (b) How do animals of urochordata differ from those of cephalochordate with reference to notochord?
13           Represent diagrammatically, the three types of flowers based on the position of floral parts on the thalamus.  Name an example for each.
14.          (a) Cork cambium forms tissues that form the cork.  Do you agree with this statement?  Explain.
                (b) How does it differ from bark?
15           (a) what is a mesosome in a prokaryotic cells?
                (b) Differentiate between pili and fimbriae of bacteria.
16           (a) Why do you call enzyme as biocatalysts.
                (b) What do a, b, c and d represent in the graph given below?




17           (a) which stage of meiosis division last for month or years in oocytes of some vertebrates?
                (b) Why is mitosis called equational division?  Give any two major significant differences between mitosis and meiosis?
18           (a) Observe the given figure and identify the process I and II.



(b) What is meant by apoplast path way?  Why does it occur in cortex and not in endodermis?
19           Leguminous plants fix atmospheric nitrogen. How is this achieved? Explain.
20           Glucose is broken down to pyruvic acid anaerobically. Do you agree with this statement. Explain.

                ‘The respiratory pathway is an amphibolic pathway’. Describe it.
21           Aldosterone increases the blood pressure and regulates GFR. Justify.

            Section – D
23           Rita sends his 12years son Monish to bring the vegetable oil from market. He reached the market and asked the shop to give the vegetable oil with on PUFA. The shopkeeper gave the bottle of oil has a constituent label consisting Minimum cholesterol, High PUFA, Zero sugar level.
               a. What do you meant by PUFA? Mention its significance for health?
               b. Why does Doctor not prescribe the vegetable ghee to the patient of cardiovascular disease?
                Which value to show by Monish to selecting the oil?
Section – E
24           (a) Cyclic photophosphorylation results in the production of ATP and not NADPH. Give reasons.
               (b) Where do you find RuBisCo in C3 and C4 plants?

                (a) Give two reasons for each of the following:
                (i) Photosynthesis is considered to be the most important metabolic process on the      earth.
                (ii) Photorespiration is considered to be a wasteful process.
                (b) Describe the three phases of Calvin cycle.
